About Testimonials Contact

I am a specialist in conditions of the upper-limb and I have been so since I was appointed a consultant orthopaedic surgeon in 1998. Over the last 21 years I have developed shoulder and elbow surgery as my particular area of expertise.

I look after all conditions affecting the arm whether they be as a result of a sports injury, accident or wear and tear. I frequently work with people of all ages; from the young athlete to the more mature individual.

Furthermore, I have been involved in teaching arthroscopic (key hole) surgery to the next generation of surgeons as well working as an examiner for the orthopaedic trainees' final exam. This, alongside both lecturing and attending national and international conferences, keeps me abreast of the latest surgical techniques and current research.

I generally take the view that surgical intervention is not necessarily the first option to be explored and, backed by an experienced team of physiotherapists, we will always consider both surgical and non-surgical treatments.

I am 72 years old and have suffered with osteoarthritis for several years.  After struggling with chronic pain in my left shoulder which made carrying out everyday tasks impossible, Mr Buchanan carried out a complete left shoulder replacement in 2013.  Because of the success of this operation I had no hesitation when Mr Buchanan recommended having a right shoulder replacement when it became necessary in 2018.  I did not expect the new shoulders to give me the mobility I was born with, but the results in both cases far surpassed my expectations and have enabled me to return to living a normal life.

Dr Buchanan operated on my elbow shortly after I broke it snowboarding. I was warned that I would have restricted movement in my arm and may incur nerve damage in my left hand, which as a musician was very distressing. After recovering for about 2-3 months however, I was back touring, playing guitar and piano & now 10 months after the operation, I have full movement back in my arm and my hand has almost returned to normal - I'd like to say a huge thank you to Jamie for allowing me to continue doing what I love!

I have recently had a reverse shoulder replacement operation under Mr. Buchanan and it has been a great success. I had been experiencing severe pain in the arthritic joint for a long time and was finding it increasingly difficult to wash and dress and to do all the necessary household activities required when living alone. Now, after 3 months, the shoulder is nearly pain-free and the mobility I have regained is extraordinary - the easy exercises I was given to do will have no doubt helped with that. I am extremely grateful to Mr. Buchanan and his team for their skills, to the Staff at the Spire hospital for their excellent care, and to the NHS in enabling me at age 85 to carry on living an independent life.

I first met Jamie in September 2018. I found him to be courteous, professional and comforting. Within minutes of arriving he diagnosed me as having a major pectoral rupture and gave me an overview of all my options. It is quite a rare injury and not many specialists are in this field.
I decided to have surgery to give me the best chance of getting full motion and strength again in that area.  It was actually quite a challenge for Jamie as my injury was 4 months old already and there was no guarantee of success. I am glad to say that the operation was a success and that I am now 4 months down the line and hope to have recovered completely to return to competitive sport after 6-7 months. Jamie jas been great, pre during and after surgery and is clearly an expert in his field. He came highly recommended and equally I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend myself.

Mr Jamie Buchanan has been treating my arthritic shoulder since 1999 and has successfully operated on it to relieve the pain.
Recently however my condition worsened with constant pain and after a further consultation Mr Buchanan recommended that I should now have a complete shoulder replacement.  He explained the risks of shoulder surgery compared to knee and hip replacements, which he pointed out were far more robust.
I am very happy to report that the operation has been a complete success and despite the inconvenience of wearing a sling for a short period and not driving for a few weeks, I spent only one night in hospital.
On every visit I have found Mr Buchanan to be charming, approachable, helpful and professional and have no hesitation in recommending him.

I can't believe that just a year ago Georgie had her shoulder put back together with plates and screws. She has such huge determination and it is really paying off. 5th place in her section at her 2nd ever event! Mr B did such a great job.
